RCET’s New Young Carers Project Receives Boost from National Lottery

We are delighted to announce that we have received £9,894 from the National Lottery Awards for All Scotland Programme for our new Respite Peer Activity Breaks for Young Carers.

The funding will support RCET’s Children & Family Support Co-ordinator Karen to deliver Respite Peer Activity Breaks for Armed Forces Young Carers for the first time in the charities history.

Colin Flinn, Chief Executive of the Royal Caledonian Education Trust said “We are absolutely thrilled that in the first time in the Trust’s history we will be delivering directed support for Armed Forces Young Carers. We know that many Armed Forces young people have caring responsibilities but are often hidden from traditional support services. We hope that these new breaks, along with our individual respite grants for Armed Forces Young Carers will ensure that those with caring responsibilities’ can still reach their full potential and thrive.”

We will be offering 6 places of a 6-week Surf Therapy course with partners Wave Therapy in Dunbar and 12 places on a 4 day bush craft course with partners Treeline Coaching in the Helensburgh area.

The Breaks will be open to any Armed Forces Young Carers and travel and subsistence will be provided for both breaks.

The Breaks will bring Armed Forces young carers together which is crucial as Armed Forces young people often tell us that civilian peers don’t understand the challenges in their lives which can be even more isolating when you have a caring responsibility additionally. These breaks will allow Armed Forces peers to bond with one other, connect them into support services in their local community (if they want or need this) and help them to increase their confidence, resilience and ability to reach their full potential.

If you are a young carer, or would like to put a young carer forward for a much-need respite break then please contact RCET at the earliest opportunity on familysupport@rcet.org.uk or ask for Karen Stock on 0131 322 7350.
