The Education Programme
The Royal Caledonian Education Trust has developed a very successful Education Programme which provides charitable funds and resources to selected schools and local authorities in Scotland to improve support for Armed Services Children and their families particularly prior to, during and post deployment. This initiative started as a project in 2005 and it has grown considerably since then. Initially it provided small grants for items of equipment to individual schools in Scotland with large numbers of Service Children. With the increase in operational deployment, especially in Afghanistan and the continued effects of mobility, the Trust has increased it’s support via the Education Programme and is constantly developing new ways in which it can support the education of Service Children.
The core mission of the Education Programme is:
- Promoting good practice in mitigating the effects of mobility on children of military service families.
- Improving support for children and families of military service personnel prior to, during and post deployment to operational zones as well as improving support for their teachers.
- Developing coordinated action to meet the educational needs of Service Children in Scotland.
Through the Education Programme we have been responsible for:
- Ensuring teaching support for Service Children.
- Grants towards additional part-time teachers.
- Provision of training for teachers and support agencies.
- Grants towards the creation of ‘rooms to be’.
- Contributing to critical incident response plans.
- We also have an active conference and speaker programme and regularly partake in forums to promote best practice and learning.
The work of the Education Programme continues to grow and in the coming years we will be focusing on achieving specific longer term outcomes.
